Arthritis runs in the family. Based upon lavender's history as a headache remedy, I tested its ability to help relax stiff joints in the morning. It did, and it didn't take much.
I discovered arnica a few years later. I didn't like the gel-based products on the market, so I went straight to a manufacturer of arnica oil in the Rocky Mountains.
I thought about making an arnica based massage oil. However, oils are harder to carry. They're notorious for leaking out. So I developed an Arnica Lavender massage lotion instead.
Essential Oil-Enhanced Relief
I love the feel of this lotion. It absorbs quickly and slides on beneath my hands without friction. However, that's not all I like about it. With a little research, I found a combination of essential oils that folklore alleges are soothing properties to complement the arnica. I use these oils to scent the lotion.
Lavender EO was as effective as tramadol, a prescription medication, at reducing pain in one study. [Source]
Rose Geranium EO contains three components that studies show reduce inflammation (a primary cause of pain)—citronellol, geraniol, and citronellyl formate. [Source]

The FDA doesn't allow me to make any claims for this lotion. I can't tell you it will take away pain. However, test it for yourself. If your body responds to arnica and lavender, this lotion could take the edge off your discomfort.
Description
Arnica’s use in European herbal traditions for pain is ancient. The discovery of non-psychoactive cannabidiol (CBD) for calming inflammation is more recent. Though some websites claim its use goes back thousands of years, it’s really a recent entrant to the herbal scene. Personal testimonies suggest each of these herbal extractions are effective separately. However, because the FDA requires testing to make any claims, this lotion is sold solely as a body care product.
My Story
When I lived in St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands, I was introduced to the use of natural remedies by Aubrey Edwards, a naturopath and owner of a local health food store. Ever since I have sought plant-based solutions to resolve life’s everyday aches and pains.
I first discovered arnica when we returned to the U.S after spending almost five years in Canada. I share my story for why I developed my first arnica lotion formula here.
I learned about CBD in the summer of 2019 while helping staff a booth at the Clark County Fair (southern Washington). Multiple CBD sellers had booths on the fairgrounds. I accepted the offer to test one vender’s product, and it seemed to relieve some of the tension I always carry in my shoulders (a side effect of writing for hours a day). However, the cost was more than my level of pain justified.
It took some time to find a reliable wholesale CBD source. However, I finally accomplished my goal when I found Essential Depot, and that is how I’m able to offer this lotion now at a price I would be willing to pay.
Menthol-free Tension Relief
I hate going around smelling like those old muscle balms I grew up with. (Bengay, I'm looking at you.) Who wants to announce they’re in pain? So I’ve looked for natural solutions with a more subtle scent.
I’ve also formulated this lotion without lavender because I know so many people who experience headaches when they’re exposed to it.
Ultimately, there are many people who find CBD is helpful, while others don’t experience any benefits at all. Only trying it for yourself will prove which person you are.
Why Combine Arnica and CBD?
My friend Aubrey claimed that the combination of many herbs produces a greater effect than either herb used separately. There are no studies to confirm that this is true for Arnica and CBD. However, there are studies confirming this wisdom for other botanicals. It was this concept that inspired me to develop a formula that combines both.

This bar has the aroma of freshly picked chamomile flowers with hints of fresh green herbs. Also A tranquil combination of fresh herbs and cool camphor. Bug Repellent: The smell of lavender essential oil is potent for many types of bugs like mosquitoes, midges, and moths. Apply some of the lavender oil on the exposed skin when outside to prevent these irritating bites. Furthermore, if you do happen to be bitten by one of those bugs, the lavender essential oil has anti-inflammatory qualities that will reduce the irritation and the pain associated with bug bites.
Sleep: Lavender essential oil induces sleep which has made it a common recommendation for an alternative treatment of insomnia. Frequent studies on elderly patients have shown an increase in their sleep regularity when their normal sleep medication is replaced with some lavender essential oil being placed on their pillows. It has such a relaxing impact on people that it can often replace modern medicine for sleep issues.
Nervous system: Lavender essential oil has a calming scent which makes it an excellent tonic for the nerves and anxiety issues. Therefore, it can also be helpful in treating migraines, headaches, depression, nervous tension and emotional stress. The refreshing aroma removes nervous exhaustion and restlessness while also increasing mental activity. It has a well-researched impact on the autonomic nervous system, which is why it is frequently used as a treatment for insomnia and also as a way to regulate heart-rate variability. One study showed that people taking tests showed a significant decrease in mental stress and anxiety, as well as increased cognitive function when they inhaled lavender oil and rosemary oil before taking the exam!
